About Sarah...
Sarah loves to sing and always has! She began leading singing in 2016 in a local primary school and then with adults in her local community. Sarah has innate musicality and is a natural teacher and has become a popular singing leader with an enthusiastic following over the years. Upbeat and fun, Sarah leads with energy, warmth and humour, holding a supportive and safe space where even the most unconfident of singers can find their voice. Sarah lives in Castlemorton in south Worcestershire with her family. She loves walking on the Malvern Hills and finding time to draw and paint. Sarah is a member of the Natural Voice Network which you can find out more about below.
The 'natural voice' is an idea at the heart of the small organisation the Natural Voice Network (NVN): it is the singing voice you were born with, and whatever that sounds like you should feel allowed and able to sing with it, without any barriers in the way such as the need for musical training or reading music. Natural voice members hold these ideals at the centre of their singing leadership. You can find out more about the Natural Voice Network and see Sarah's member profile here.
About 'natural voice' and the NVN
Harmony Tribe groups and workshops begin with a simple body and voice warm-up. Sarah then teaches a number of songs using a 'call and response' method. Songs are learnt from scratch, part-by-part then and there in the session and sung for pleasure a capella without accompaniment or backing tracks. Every song is sung from the heart and with great enjoyment to the best of the group's ability, but there is never an intention of 'perfecting' songs, and Harmony Tribe groups never perform to an audience. There is always a short rest break for reviving tea and biscuits and a bit of socialising.
Songs at Harmony Tribe
The type of songs sung at a Harmony Tribe group or workshop are wide-ranging: from all around the world and in English and other languages; in rounds and part-harmony; from old and 'traditional' songs, to brand new songs from contemporary composers, and many other songs inbetween. Most songs you will never had heard of, but they are all great to sing. At a monthly group, new songs are sung each month, with occasional re-visits to ones that were particularly good to sing or because they celebrate a particular season. (Pop, classics, show tunes or ecclesiastical music are not sung at Harmony Tribe.)
Why Harmony Tribe monthly groups are not 'choirs'
Harmony Tribe monthly groups are called 'singing groups' and not 'choirs' because a) there are no auditions so you do not have to be "Good At Singing", b) there are no performances, c) there is no reading from musical notation, d) you sit in a friendly circle rather than in traditional rows, e) you do not have to know what 'part' you sing (you can choose different parts from song to song if you like!), and f) even if it is a monthly group there is no expectation that you attend every month (though Sarah would like you to!)
Who can attend Harmony Tribe
Sarah is an encouraging and supportive leader: even if you are very nervous or haven't sung for ages (or ever!) Sarah will put you at ease, helping you slowly but steadily find your voice and grow in confidence. All types of voices and levels of singing experience are welcome at a Harmony Tribe group or workshop, from total beginners to advanced singers: satisfaction for everyone guaranteed! (Harmony Tribe groups are not suitable for the learning disabled, hearing impaired or for people with voice control issues.)
